I’m currently working as a rhino monitor and security technician (on law enforcement side through use of camera trapping) I’m looking forward to learning GIS and know for sure it will add so much value to the work that I’m currently doing.
My name is Olanike Grace Ogundana. I am currently studying Ecotourism and Wildlife Management at the Federal University Of Technology Akure (FUTA) ,Ondo State, Nigeria. I am glad to be here; it’s a great privilege. I am a lover of nature (environmental and wildlife conservation); A member of Environmental Conservation Club Nigeria and Nigerian Society for Environmental Conservation. Currently doing my internship at Omu Resort Zoo, Lagos Island, Nigeria. I was introduced to GIS and Remote sensing recently this year where i was able to practically do what i learnt.
I look forward to learning more about GIS and acquire new skills.
Hello everyone! My name is Taylor and I live in the United States. I currently work for a State Department in the field of water quality and regulation. I have been using ArcGIS minimally and am looking to expand my knowledge and understanding of these programs to be able to use them to their full potential for both my job and future career.
i am roxan eupena-caray, from Mindanao, Philippines. I am an instructor, teaching biology subjects. i’m doing biodiversity studies, and fun working with nematodes and soil microarthropods. i really want to learn GIS because i want to explore and incorporate such learning in my teaching profession and also my passion to nematodes and soil microarthropods.
Hello everyone !
My name is Laura Palomino from Colombia. I am currently studying Biology at the Universidad del Valle and I am very interested in learning about GIS and its importance as a tool to generate conservation plans. I am developing my degree proyect with species distribution models of hifh mountain bromelias to evaluate their conservation status, since they are quite threatened. So I hope I get the most out of this course and I hope you do too. Greetings
I am currently finishing up my MSc at the University of Otago in New Zealand. My project focuses on examining mycorrhizal communities of two native plant species in the context of restoration. Since I am finishing up my degree, I am in the market for a job, and many positions that I’m interested in applying for involve using QGIS. So, I’m excited to be here and learn something new!
HI Hannah, if you are capturing GPS co-ordinates as a “track” this would be represented as a linear feature, but individual observations should be captured as “points” then you can analyse cluster patterns of the points. There are various QGIS geometry functions available though so you should be able to extract all the vertices of the “track” to be able to convert them to points, from where cluster analysis would be possible. It depends on what you are actually recording and what you want to analyse though, if you have recorded multiple “tracks” of animals, then you can use proximity of overvaly analysis to identify where several tracks are in the same proximity. Or even more sophisticated, if you have a numebr of tracks that wander around the same area, you may want to look at identifying “density of activity” ie. identifying how long a particualr animal is active within any given area (eg. a 1km x 1km grid ), if an animnal is passing straight through the area en-route to somewhere else, then its activity density in that square will be low, if this comprises its “homerange” and it wanders around and around within that single 1km x 1km grid, then it has a high activity density (based on length of track or time spent along that track), Hope this helps. Cheers Jonathan
Hi everyone! I’m YiWynn from Malaysia currently completing my undergrad in Biology, Environmental Studies and Race and Ethnic Studies in the USA. My aspiration is to go into the field of marine conservation and am super excited to learn the ins and outs of GIS!
How fun it is to meet a Kiwi here! I was in New Zealand for an environmental studies study abroad program last February, great place with many great memories!
My name is Eliah Sadondo , from Zimbabwe ,currently on internship , studying Geography and Environmental Science . I started using QGIS , practically on the beginning of my internship . I am looking forward to learn a lot from this course .
Hello colleagues,I have the pleasure joining this noble group.
My name is Saad Muhammad Hashidu,a Nigerian national.
My first degree is in Forestry and Wildlife management, from Federal University of Technology Yola(FUTY)
and MTech in Ecosystems Management at Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH)Yola Nigeria.
I have rose to the rank of Director Forestry and Wildlife management,in the ministry of Environment and Forest Resources, Gombe State, Nigeria
Am new to QGIS course and would be pleased to learn and work in a team with the learning community.
Best regards.
I am currently working for Talarak Foundation Inc, an NGO based in Negros Island in the Philipppines whose primary goal is reintroduction of endangered endemic species which have been expatriated from most of the island. My current work now is on the Negros cave frogs in Negros Oriental, checking for the presence of Chytrid fungus within different locations.
I have already had the an intro course to Qgis under the Wildlife Conservation Course by WildCRU in Malaysia but that was years ago and I am now pretty rusty and so I am hoping to refresh and learn new knowledge about working with GIS.
My name is Joaquin and I am a recent Public Health Graduate from UC Merced!
I have decided to take this course to help make myself a more competitive in candidate in the job fields I am applying too. I am excited to be here!!
I am a PhD student in New Zealand exploring the biogeography of NZ birds, particularly in response to climate change both past and present. I will be using GIS often in making species distribution models, so am looking forward to becoming more versed in its use. I love that there are participants here from all over the globe!
I find it very interesting that you work around water quality and regulation because that is a career field I hope to be apart of!
Specifically, I just applied to a position working in the San Joaquin River Watershed as a part of an AmeriCorps fellowship studying the Water quality in the watershed and surrounding areas. Out of curiosity, how often do you use GIS in your current field?
