I have a B.A. in Sustainability and am wanting to delve more into the conservation world. Currently, I work in the field of education and I love my job. I took a college intro course to GIS many years ago, but it feels like I am starting from scratch. I am excited to expand my skillset with this course and grateful for the opportunity.
I personally do not use GIS much for my part of the job. But I do not have much background with GIS. I have a few coworkers who use GIS daily for their job duties. It just kind of depends. I would say it is important to know at least the basics of GIS though (that was a requirement when I was hired).
Hello there
I am Mafuza Maya from South Africa. I teach physical geography and Remote Sensing in Mpumalanga. I am interested in using satellite images to map mining activities in South Africa.
Because of new distance learning, I am migrating from ArcGIS to QGIS.
I’m Dhivya. I am very new to QGIS and haven’t used it before, so I’m keen to learn. I currently work with an NGO that works on marine mammals and hopefully I can pick up some skills to help visualize/plot any data we collect.
Hello
My name is Bolarinwa Samuel Folorunsho, Student of Remote sensing & Geoscience information system of the Federal University of Technology Akure Ondo State, Nigeria. I have basic knowledge & skills on ArcGis and QGis.
Taking this opportunity to add to my knowledge, skills and contributing to the environment at large.
This is Jacelyn from Malaysia. I did my Bsc in Animal Resource Science and is current doing my Msc in Wildlife Ecology and management while juggling a job in Malaysian Nature Society. My research is on habitat selection of herons and current work is focusing on conservation of waterbirds in Malaysia.
I’ve had experience with Qgis and know a little bit of ArcGIS and GEE. However, I am still quite an amateur in GIS and is hoping to learn more knowledge about working with GIS.
My name is Mapfumo Mulisa from South Africa, masters candidate in Environmental Sciences at the University of Venda. I did GIS and Remote sensing during my undergraduate that’s where I discovered my passion about GIS…
Hi everyone, Im Graciela Venezuelan Biologist intersted in marine ecology and sea turtle conservation. Im currently working in Costa Rica. This is my first experience with QGIS.
My name is Monica Ndlovu from Durban, South Africa. I am currently doing my Advanced Diploma in Nature Conservation at the Mangosuthu University of Technology and I also am also volunteering for the Ecosystems Rehabilitation and Restoration Project within the institution.
Currently I am working as an On-site Facilitator at the Restoration Ecology Branch in Buffelsdraai, last year I completed my Work Integrated at the National Zoological Gardens in Pretoria. I recently added birding as one of my hobbies but I also enjoy hiking. I am looking forward to learning more about GIS because I believe it will be a skill that can be very beneficial to me when I do research in the future or in the field.
Hello! My name is Taylor and I’m from the US. I finished my BSc in Field and Wildlife Biology at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo back in 2017, and just recently finished a Master’s of Wildlife Management at the University of Otago in New Zealand.
I did my final report on species distribution modeling of a fragmented bat population in New Zealand, and I had to use QGIS a little bit to manipulate some spatial data (roost sites and environmental rasters) in order to input everything into R. So, I am familiar with the system but I want to learn more, and learn how to manage other types of data!
Currently I am looking for jobs both in New Zealand and back in the US, where both my partner and I could be closer to family. Prior to my master’s, I worked for the National Park Service as an interpretive ranger, so I would love to go back and work as a wildlife biologist!
I’m so excited to see you’re moving to Alaska! I worked for Kenai Fjords National Park a few years ago and lived in Seward and it was an absolute dream! You’re going to love it
I’m also an American but currently living in NZ- such a unique experience compared to the environments I have seen in the US! What work were you able to do during your working holiday? Fantails are my favorite too!
Hi, I am a conservation biologist from Madagascar. I am currently doing my PhD in Ecology and Evolution. I have some basic knowledge of GIS but it seems like I forgot how to use it because I was stuck when I tried to import my data but nothing appeared on the screen. The reasons why I attend this course are to refresh my skills but also to help me design my research survey. I want to identify all my fieldwork sites from the map, their size, to differentiate different types of habitat or land cover from the map, to measure the distance between two polygons, the surface of an area, etc.
Jimmy Asiku from Uganda. I have BSc in Environmental Science and completing MSc in Conservation and Natural Resources here in Uganda. I have been in to conservation of natural resource (forests, hill tops, wetlands, river banks, lake shores) but recently I have developed interest in biodiversity conservation specifically plantae kingdoms. For my thesis, am researching the distribution and abundance of Balanites aegyptiaca tree in semi arid region of eastern Uganda.
I had basics of GIS in my university level but I have struggled to practice it and I would like to sharpen by practice my knowledge and skill in using it and apply it in my work.
Hello Everyone,
My name is Natasha, I work for a non-profit concerned with the conservation of Southern Ground-Hornbills. As far back as I can remember I have been fascinated by birds and stand in awe of the natural world. It has been my life’s goal to learn more to be better able to make a real difference.
I found this course, and I am ever grateful for the opportunity to be able expand and broaden my knowledge, on principles that are key in todays conservation circle.
Good day, Everyone.
My name is Heinrich Nel. I live in South-Africa and is privilege’s enough to live and work in the African bush. I am currently employed as a research Technician with the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project, a NGO who strives to reverse the decline of this miracles species.
I have done a Arch GIS course before so i am doing this as a refresher and also sharpening my skills. I am looking forward to it.
All the best and enjoy
Hi everyone. I am Tandi and looking forward to learn as much as possible from this course. This is a new concept for me, but have passion to learn and know how it works. Hope l will grasp a lot from the instructors and those who have background and expertise in it. Thank you
