Introduce yourself!

Hello, good day everyone. I am Angelme Samong, Im from Philippines, Currently studying Bachelor of Science major in Biology, I am a biginner, but I am here to willing to learn some GIS work, and use it in the future.

Hi. I’m Willemien van Wyk, studying for a PhD at Stellenbosch university in South Africa. Although I’m a practicing veterinarian, I’m exploring the influence of climate change and pollutants on the seagrass, Zostera capensis for my research project. Part of my work will involve mapping the distribution of Zostera in my study estuary, for which GIS will be very useful.
Thank you so much for this opportunity!

Hi Everyone,

My name is Katie Wyssmann, I’m a MS student at the University of New Orleans studying seagrass epiphytes using metabarcoding techniques. I’ve previously worked on both coasts of the U.S. with various marine species and have also worked with Howler Monkeys and Flammulated Owls.

Hi everyone! My name is Bianca Boshoff, I am an Honours student at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. I am doing my Honours in Biodiversity and Ecology, with my Honours project focusing on the relationship between seagrasses and microplastics. I did a QGIS course in my undergraduate but I have not used it since, therefore this course will serve as a nice refresher. I may also go on to do a Masters degree which may involve mapping microplastic distribution for which this course will come in handy! Thank you for this opportunity, I am very happy to be here.

Hi everyone,

I’m a biology instructor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey, BC Canada. I want to learn how to use aerial imagery from a drone to map the distribution of plant species. I’m new to QGIS and keen to learn how to use it to make awesome maps.

Hi Everyone!

My name is CJ McClellan. I have been a secondary science teacher in the United States for the last 8 years. I have decided to use my biology degree and make a career change to GIS/conservation biology. I am not quite sure what I want my future career to look like or where exactly I’ll land but I am excited to learn a new skill. I have a little experience with ArcGIS Pro and cartography but am looking forward to learning QGIS and how to implement data sets.

Thank you for this course!

Hi all! My name is Sam. I am currently an environmental science undergraduate at the University of California Riverside. I’ve done research on Santa Ana winds and their relationship with air quality in Southern California and native oyster populations along the North American west coast. I look forward to learning QGIS.

Hi everyone. My name is Jean Venter. I have a degree in Industrial Engineering but I am currently busy with a MSc in Animal, Plant & Environmental Science. I am doing a research project on the habitat use, diet and home range establishment of a reintroduced black rhino population in Malawi.

I am passionate about conservation and I hope to be able to make a difference in conservation. I believe that this course will support me in using GIS in both my current research and in my future careers

Hello everyone,

My name is Gabriela Hall and I am currently an undergraduate student at Colorado State University-Pueblo. I am pursing a degree in Wildlife and Natural Resources and was recommended to take this course by one of my professors. I am a bit late in starting off in the course as I was away from home and my laptop on a short vacation in Seattle. I typically enjoy reading or crafting in my spare time. I’m currently reading The Plague Dogs by Richard Adams and would recommend it as a large theme of the novel deals with the ethics of scientific research dealing with animals especially in the past. I am looking forward to learning more about all of you as well as about GIS.

Thank you for having me!

Hi there, I found your username to be quite interesting! Does your PhD work center around frogs or another amphibian? I hope that this course aids in helping you design your research survey.

Best of luck,
Gabriela H.

Very much looking forward to learning how to use QGIS and being part of this amazing community. Sorry for coming late to the party! I have a soft spot for seabirds and sitting on a bunch of tracking data I hope to analyse and visualize better. I have limited internet coverage especially during July but hope that I can keep up with everyone.

Looking forward to meeting you!
Ursula

Hello everyone! I’m Sara, a biologist from Colombia! I work with a grassroots conservation NGO in the Colombian Pacific and I’m about to start my Master’s in Evolutionary biology and Ecology in Belgium. I love traveling and discovering places, learning new things, and being outdoors. Looking forward to learning QGIS and meeting you!

Hello Everyone!
My name is Wenilyn Huniog
I’m studying in Surigao Del Sur state University(SDSSU) in Tandag City Surigao del sur taking up Bachelor of Science in Biology.
I don’t any idea about GIS, but this is an require for our OJT to learn here more.
I looking forward for the student who have enter of this to learn and be interesting for all the topics.
Nice meet you all!!!

Hello Everyone.

I am extremely sorry for my late introduction. I was caught up a bit providing care to my family members amidst this Pandemic.

My name is Nikit Surve. I am from Mumbai, Maharashtra State, India. After finishing my Master’s degree in Wildlife Sciences I have been working on a project along with the State Forest Departmnet where we are studying and trying to understand interactions taking place between leopards and humans. My study area is very unique as it harbours a high density of leopards and the protected area I situated right in the heart of Mumbai City. Currently I Ama part of the Wildlife Conservation Society - India Program. I enjoy walking, talking reading and eating.

Best wishes

Hi everyone. Sorry I’m a very late to the discussion. I’m Louise from the UK and I completed my MSc in Conservation Biology in 2019. I’m currently on maternity leave and hoping this course keeps my knowledge fresh!

Hi Nikit! Sending best wishes to you and your family, I hope you’re keeping safe and well

Hey, everyone! My name is Aric, and I ama recent graduate from the MNRS program at Colorado State University. I am trying to gain a foundation in GIS as I look to change career paths. I look forward to learning with you all.
