Hello everyone, I am Rachael Abulu, an environmental biologist and a graduate student (MSc Geography) at York University (meant to start Fall 2021). I’m interested in learning more about GIS and using the knowledge gained in spatial data analysis and biodiversity monitoring. I have little or no knowledge on the subject and I am willing and determined to learn as much as I can from this course and collaborate with fellow conservationalists. Thank you for the opportunity VerdantLearn!
Hi Ntokozo,
Great to have you here! Guess you are studying at the Fitz? Would love to connect with you. I am currently studying at the Fitz.
Best Regards,
Oluwadunsin
Hi Oluwadunsin
Oh no, I’m at the Cape Pensula University of Technology (CPUT) in Cape Town. Great you are here too, hopefully we will work well all together!
Best regards,
Ntokozo
I am Linda from Houston, Texas. I am seeking a career in conservation, restoration, and/or regenerative agriculture. GIS is one of the skills I have Identified as a good area for me focus as a life long lover of maps & as a former database designer and data analyst. I have taken a GIS tutorial via LinkedIn
HI
I am Bongeka Khumalo from Durban, joining the course late. I recently graduated for Advanced Diploma in Nature Conservation at Mangosuthu University of Technology, i would love to learn about GIS as it will be of great help in my career.
Hi everyone, I’m Kevin. Very nice to be here
I’m graduate of Protected areas managment.
I hope this course will help me to process an analyze the data of my ecological monotoring
activities. I’ll be be happy to share here my experience an skills in wildlife conservation and learn from others.
Hi folks!
I am trying to break into the wildlife biology field and while I have great field skills I have always shied away from the technology side. I live in Choteau, MT a small town about 2 hours south of Glacier NP and the Canadian border.
I am currently in my senior year working towards a BS in Environmental Science with a focus in Fish and WIldlife Management (despite being 27). I also have 2 part time jobs 1) as a veterinary technician and 2) as a wildlife field technician working on a grizzly bear/ guardian dog study. In addition I just finished a really neat course on the importance of hunting to conservation. Since that is now done I have a tiny bit of spare time to focus on this!
My passions are wildlife and Wilderness. I feel like I don’t have time to relax now but it is motivating to know that I will graduate in January 2022 and will have breathing room at that point!
Looking forward to diving in!
-Ali
Hi Lucy,
My name is Zainab, I have done fieldwork at Yankari Game Reserve, Bauchi State, Nigeria on mammals… Took a long break from fieldwork to teach. I am trying to resume fieldwork and what better way to do that than to first get myself reacquainted with up-to-date survey techniques and technologies for both survey and analysis. I will be doing all these alongside teaching.
Fun fact, I co-founded and coordinate the activities of The Abuja Bird Club, Abuja, Nigeria. Happy to be here…
P.S.: Apologies for joining late. I had to attend to some health challenges but I am fine now.
Hi Linda,
It will be nice to get to know you and share ideas on the aspects you have mentioned. Nigeria has lost a lot of vegetation over the years especially in the northern part where I am from. This has led to conflicts between farmers and herders all the while putting pressure on our national parks and reserves as protection and enforcement are weak.
Nice to meet you Kevin…
Hey All,
My name is Brady. I have a background in veterinary medicine with a bachelor’s and associate’s in that. I’ve wanted to get involved in the wildlife conservation world for a long time and I heard that learning GIS is very important for getting your foot in the door.
Sorry I started late and I hope to complete this course in time!

So So Sorry for the late reply and introduction God Bless!!
Hello, I am a water resource scientist hoping to incorporate more GIS techniques in the visualization and processing of spatial data into my field. I have a BSc in Fisheries and Wildlife Management and a MSc in Environmental Science. Cheers! Randy
Hy,
I am Deborah Elesie from Nigeria, I am a forester volunteering in the environmental space, I advocate for SDG 13&15 goals and also a Climate Reality Leader trained in August 2020 by the former vice president of America Mr. Al Gore.
I am here to learn as I plan to embark an MSc in Forest Conservation and wildlife.
Am so sorry am late here I have been unavailable.
Hi guys
My name is Sinovuyo Ndzekeni. I recently graduated Advanved Diploma in Environmental Management from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. I did GIS during up to second year. However, I was not really into it. As a result I didn’t choose on my 3rd and 4th year and I never practiced it. Now, I am hoping that I will get at least the basic GIS skills that are mostly required in the work place.
Hi. Am Munzhelele Elisa Pandelani from South Africa
Hi
I am Grace from Philippines, I am a BS Biology Student.
i am also a phd student but in education at the university of forthare. Wow your study is interesting
Hello everyone.
I’ve been delaying to introduce my self, and i’m sorry about this.
My mane is Rahma Safitri, I’m a marine science student in Trunojoyo University, Indonesia.
This field of education requires me to study geographic information systems and mapping. Knowing that there was an opportunity for a QGIS software course made me very interested and excited. This is something I’ve been wanting to learn for a long time, even though I’m basically good at AcrGIS. However, I’m always interested in new things.
With this course I hope to increase my skills and insights, as well as broaden my experiences and friendships.
HI @Rahma_Safitri
An undertanding of how ArcGIS works will certainly help understand the basic concepts of using QGIS.
Both ArcGIS and QGIS are able to do largely the same things, but the terminology and where you will find the functions will be different - stick at it though, I had been using ArcGIS for many years before using QGIS and initially found it confusing and ended up reverting back to ArcGIS as it was “quicker” to do something I knew how to use - but eventually I got the time to understand QGIS and now use both software packages on a daily basis. Good Luck
