Introduce yourself!

Hello everyone!
My name is Lucia, I´m from Argentina and I am currently studying a bachelor in Biological sciences at university. I am a beginner at QGIS and I´m looking forward to learning it and using it in future projects.

Hello everyone!
My name is Mengistu Birhan.
I am gratuated in applied Biology(BSc) from Addis Ababa university,Ethiopia.
I have working with Ethiopian wolf conservation programme(ewcp) since 2017. My job description from January,2017 to March,2019 was environmetal education and community outreach officer; and from April, 2019 to now is wolf monitoring officer. I am so excited to found this helpful course to create a GIS project to combine our wolf monitoring data with free environmental data,
visualise our field data effectively and create maps that clearly show our wolf home range.
Thank you to meet you all
Mengistu

Hi everyone!

My name is Jeremy and I work as a pilot for Alaska Seaplanes in Juneau, Alaska.

Prior to this, I worked in Gabon as a conservation and anti-poaching pilot for Wildlife Conservation Society. I will be returning to Gabon to continue my work, and I would like to gain a better understanding of QGIS so that I can create more effective maps from the data that I collect on aerial surveillance flights.

Before Gabon, I flew in DRC, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Panama, Chile, Argentina, and all around the US. Aside from flying, I enjoy surfing, climbing, skiing, whitewater kayaking, and playing guitar.

Best regards,
Jeremy

Hi, I am Nigel from Trinidad. I manage a non profit with the goal of making ecologically sustainable and regenerative economies in tropical forests. GIS appears in everything that we do. I want to be able to quickly make interactive maps that can be shared and updated under a wide variety of conditions. I’ve had some small attempts at ArcGIS that were not time efficient because I had trouble getting map data for the areas we needed to study. I’d like to make another try here that will hopefully enable us to document findings in Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and the southern Caribbean.
I’m a biologist who has worked with all classes of vertebrates in the USA, Africa and the Caribbean. I love martial arts and CrossFit. I aim to inspire behavioral change by making it easier for people to learn and change perspectives.

Nice to meet you all!

Hi everyone! I’m Anna, and I’m currently working on a PhD in Biology at the University of New Orleans in the US. I’m studying molecular ecology and immunogenetics of wild mandrills. I don’t have any background in GIS, and my current projects don’t really require it, but I have been wanting to learn these skills for the future! Looking forward to working through the course.

Hi Jeremy! What a coincidence–the fieldwork I’ve done for my PhD (studying mandrills) is also based in Gabon, in Lopé. Nice to meet you!

I’m Merlyn
I’ve just completed a Masters in Cape Town South Africa and even with the good lecturers and ArcGIS license from the Uni, covid managed to ruin the learning GIS process. I’m an ornithologist specializing in raptor biology and hoping to work in renewable energy. GIS skills are crucial to my work.
When I’m not trying to learn GIS here, I’m out birding at a park or writing articles, in art galleries or reading a book.

Small world indeed! What year were you there? I was there for 2 years from 2018 to 2020. Did you work with Lee? David? I did a lot of flying over Lopé but I only went into the park once on the ground. Gabon is a cool place!

Hi!
I’m Georgina from Argentina. I’m a fresh biologist (I just graduated last year). I’m currently doing my PhD with introduced mammal species in islands in a marine protected area (PIMCPA) in northeastern Patagonia, evaluating this species presence and the effects on marine nesting birds focusing specially on Magellanic Penguins :penguin:
Part of my job is to create a geographic information map about the presence and abundance of those species in the islands. GIS is a very useful tool to organize information from field and and an important part of my job. I have learned a little about it at university but I believe that I’ll learn much more and refresh some memories during this course!

Hello everyone, I am Aarthi. I am currently pursuing my master’s at the Yale School of Environment. I am interested in large carnivore movement/conservation and wildlife crime. I am doing fieldwork to study the movement of large carnivores in South India. A couple of fun facts, I have traveled to over 17 countries (and want to travel much more!) :airplane:, one of my dreams is to shadow a whale biologist out in the ocean :whale:, and I have a labrador named Muffin who demands my constant attention :dog2:

Hi Mengistu, it’s nice to read your description. Your job sounds amazing! I am currently studying Indian wolves for my master’s thesis. Looking forward to connecting!

Hi Jeremy, I have always wanted to do fieldwork in Alaska. It didn’t quite transpire for my master’s thesis. You’ve had such an impressive career working in anti-poaching that allowed you to travel extensively! I hope we can connect so I can learn about your experiences!

Yes, I worked with David! Not so much with Lee, though. I was there just for a month in each summer of 2017 and 2018 to collect samples.
