Welcome Abe, hope to learn from you.
Hi all,
I’m based in Johannesburg, South Africa and currently doing my MSc in Conservation Biology at the University of the Witwatersrand. I have 8 years of corporate experience in business strategy in London and South Africa, but recently quit my job to follow my heart and do something more meaningful to me - conserving biodiversity and wildlife in Africa! My research is focused on rail ecology in the Greater Kruger area of South Africa. I have a little GIS experience (MapInfo) from a previous job, but want to learn its applications in the conservation world.
Looking forward to this!
Hannah
hello everyone,
I completed my BSc in Range Science last year at the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources. I am currently a research intern at Cheetah Conservation Botswana in Ghanzi, Botswana. I have developed a passion for conservation ever since I started my degree and I want to be part of today’s solutions to problems faced by biodiversity. I am able to operate ArcGIS and now i want broaden my knowledge and skills in the GIS field. Being able to operate both ArcGIS and QGIS will be of great benefit to me career-wise.
Hello everyone,
I am Dessiew Gelaw from Ethiopian, and I am BA degree holder in Geography and environmental study, also I have been worked 8 years in Frankfurt zoological society project for monitoring work since 2009-2016 and now I am working in Ethiopian wolf conservation program June 2018 up to now as a position of wolf monitoring officer, I really eager to take this interesting GIS course because it using for me as a big tool for my wolf monitoring data to know the exact wolf population places and analysing the data by using maps.
All the best,

HI MAC,
I heared about the grey vs. red squirrel problem some years ago. Back then we thought poor red squirrel does not have a chance. But based you site you made some serious progress in saving them.
Thank you for your effort!
Thank you Yeah there’s still a fair ways to go but in Scotland at least we still have a decent chance of protecting the reds and it’s going ok - still a fair way to go but we’re holding the fort

Hello, my name is Laney Hayward Nute and I will be a first year PhD student at Ole Miss in the fall. My undergraduate research focused on foraging behavior in backyard songbirds. My graduate research will likely focus on avian conservation in regards to personalities. Career wise, I hope to continue researching avian behavior and conservation whether that be as a professor or through research facilities such as zoos or other organizations. In my free time I spend a lot of time reading and bird watching. I have an amazing support team that consists of my amazing partner and three animal children. I currently live in Alabama because my partner recently completed his masters at the University of Alabama. I am originally from Missouri and will be relocating to Mississippi in August! I hope to see much more of the states and the world throughout my research career.
Look forward to going on this journey together,
Laney
Hi There,
My apologies for the delay with my introduction.
I am Isaiah Banda based in Limpopo at Waterberg District. Currently employed by Mabula Private Game Reserve, managing Lake Kyle Reserve where we have our lions and other game species.
Before i got into the conservation side, i started off as a Landscaper for Bosch en Dal nursery designing gardens with indigenous plants for reserves and homes. However my passion was with conservation.
I moved on to become a nature guide where it opened doors for me to be in conservation.
I have been battling QGIS to create and map my roads on the reserve. When i saw this opportunity i immediately jumped on it.
I am looking forward to learning and being able to use this program to assist me and understand it fully.
Regards
Isaiah Banda
Hi All
I work for the RSPB at their Leighton Moss Reserve in the North West of England. It has the largest reed bed in north-west England and is home to a wide range of spectacular wildlife including bittern, otters, bearded tits, marsh harriers, egrets and red deer and more. The reserve covers other habitats such as woodland, limestone crag, salt marsh and wet grassland. As a wetland of international importance, it was designated a Ramsar site in 1985. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
I am hoping to gain more knowledge of the bats using the site and using GIS to help create heat maps for the various species, mainly using call recordings from static bat detectors and transects.
Cheers

hey Vuyisile! I’m also a Nust graduate! looking forward to interacting on the course!
Hi Everyone,
I left corporate research to run a small NGO focused on marine education and conservation in the Philippines. In addition to the education program with the local science high school, I want to help our municipal coastal resource office by mapping the seagrass meadows along the coastline so they can take the necessary measures to protect them. This course will be a big help in achieving that goal.
Looking forward to this!
Kim

Hi all,
I am a Livelihoods Restoration and Planning Consultant working in Zambia. I am doing this as a refresher in the use of GIS. This is obviously a very useful skillset for landuse planning and monitoring on the edges of protected areas, and for working with communities on livelihoods development. I look forward to taking part, and hoping that we are able to access course material offline as most of the time I am remote. Good luck all.
Cheers,
Matt
Hellow every one
