I am Riccardo and I am a Master’s graduate in Global Change Ecology.
I am currently doing an internship at Jersey Zoo, where I help carriyng on the conservation project on the red-blled choughs. I am interested in conservation practices that focus on habitat restoration and land-use managemet, based on the understanding of the ecological framework.
I already have some knowledge of QGIS, so my aims for this course are refreshing my skills and know more about the use of spatial data for conservation.
Hi! I’m Sharyn, based in a wildlife sanctuary in Cambodia where we have a few endangered species we are trying to keep safe. We are a tiny NGO working here… and come from the development field (as opposed to the conservation sector) so lots to learn in terms of conservation research and management of data that we collect - from camera trap images to tracks and observations of illegal forest activities… QGIS has driven me crazy so far trying to work it out without having studied it. So many new terms!! so, I’m looking forward to learning here.
Hello Everyone,
Unfortunately I find myself unemployed at the moment, so I’m keeping myself busy updating my GIS and environmental knowledge, as I search for relevant work. I have a BSc in Environmental Science and Environmental Geography as well as an MA GIS. I worked in both the private and public sector for 15 years on MapInfo and ArcGIS platforms, supporting: Land and Property Gazetteer integration; large scale home insulation programmes; urban and woodland conservation digitisation programmes. I’m obviously not new to GIS, but I’m always interested in picking up knowledge in as many different environmental fields as possible. If I can help out at all, I’m only too happy to do that.
My name is Lynet Zhou, Graduated from CUT in Zimbambwe with a BSc in Wildlife and Safari Management. I did GIS as a course at university and felt it is an important tool to help in research and mapping spatial patterns. Looking forward to expanding into Community Based Conservation in future.
I have worked with ALERT Victoria falls in Zimbabwe as an intern where i majored in African lion rehabilitation programme and currently I am volunteering with private game reserves in South Africa. I am looking forward to adding GIS as a new skill to use in wildlife conservation.
I like nature walks, watching nature documentaries and travelling.
Thank you Lucy for such a great opportunity.
Happy to meet you all.
I moved to London some time ago where I studied Protected Area Management at postgraduate level at Birkbeck University in London and I tried to work in the environmental conservation sector but couldn’t manage to get a job. I thought it was because of lack of experience. My circumstances also changes and so I moved back to Malta.
I have spent the last 2 years workings as an Events Coordinator for a Nature & History Park which was good for the experience but it was mainly admin based and I would like to do more outdoor conservation work.
I am currently therefore unemployed but about to start volunteering with a marine organisation doing ecological surveys and hopefully also volunteering for a eNGO that carries out wildlife rescue.
I want to work my way up to becoming a Site Manager of a protected area by upskilling through doing this course and other courses like in Project Management. Hopefully I will get there soon!
Thank you for making this course available to all of us!
Hi everyone, I’m Jess. I work for a conservation and community NGO in Botswana, as a project manager for projects working on issues of human-wildlife conflict. in my role I also write funding proposals and reports, and feedback information to the communities and stakeholders. I’ve used QGIS previously, but a long time ago and I’m hoping this course will refresh my memory and enable me to better represent the data we collect visually. Thanks for providing this course!
Hi everyone , I’m Celiwe Mtshali from South Africa. Recently graduated as Environmental scientist from University of KwaZulu-Natal. I look forward to learning new skills about GIS. I am currently a remote volunteer as Environmental Officer at Hanell international Environmental Network, a NON-profitable organization that deals with environmental issues.
I hope you are all doing well. I am Yoliswa Mkhize from South Africa currently working on my master’s degree. This course is great for me because although I have a background in GIS, it is mainly through ArcGIS. Learning QGIS will help me expand my knowledge.
I am a MSc (Conservation Biology) graduate with minimal experience in GIS (only done a brief course), and so I’m looking to refresh and expand my knowledge in GIS.
Looking forward to the course!
hello everyone,
My name is Timóteo Júlio
I am graduated in Biology from Agostinho Neto University, Angola.
I Work in a NGO Kissama Foundation with snakes and lizards collection.
2020 I was a coordinator internship program in Biodiversity support by Okavango Wilderness project hosted by Kissama Foundation. We a head a forest elephant project in northeast Angola.
Hi all. My name is Patience Shito. Currently based in South Africa doing conservation and research work with the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project. I am conducting research on the Endangered Southern Ground-hornbill as well as work with local communities. I would love to grow my skills in GIS as well as interact with my fellow learners as we stand to gain a lot from exchanging knowledge.
I’m Izneil Nashriq, from Malaysia. I’ve completed my MSc on systematics, ecology and biogeography of Cnemaspis gekkonid in Sarawak, Borneo, and looking forward for a PhD. My current project would be looking into karst formations and herpetofaunal association. I have little experience with ArcGIS and would like to further my knowledge on GIS software.
Thanks for sharing, Jonathan! I’ve included some OSM data in the course materials, but great to let people know they can download their own areas of interest
I’m a undergraduate student of Ecology and Conservation based in Scotland. Much of my time at university has been spent in lockdown so I have never had much of an opportunity to undertake many projects! I hope to work with coastal invertebrates, potentially bivalves, but I have time before I graduate to look at all kinds of conservation work and find new and interesting topics.
I’m hoping to learn QGIS so I can be a valuable research team member right off the bat after graduation!
My name is Lesole Montshiwa in Gaborone, Botswana. I am a wildlife officer, working for Department of Wildlife and National Parks. I have long done ArcGIS at the University at undergraduate level and I have not been practicing
, taking this GIS beginner course will refresh and enhance my skill in using QGIS, especially the mapping component.
I’m Gafarou AGOUNDE from Benin Republic (Africa). I hold a Master in Management of Wildlife, Protected Areas, and Rangeland. Currently, I’m preparing to start a Phd in alien plant invasion. In my Master’s degree thesis, I assessed the potential effect of climate change on 14 elephant food considering limited and unlimited dispersal scenarios. This study has involved GIS and remote sensing data. Therefore, I would like to perfect my knowledge in GIS by attending to this course.
I’m Vanesa, I’m a biologist and I’m currently a postdoctoral fellow in Argentina. I study the anthropogenic impact on small mammal populations, especially in agricultural areas.
I have a background in SIG but I need to broaden and deepen my knowledge, that is why I am interested in this course.
Hi everyone,
I am Sangale from Kenya. I did my BSc in Wildlife Management and currently interning at a community based conservation organization in Eastern Kenya. I’m excited to learn more about QGIS in-order to grow my skills in GIS.
You are very welcome here, and not at all an interloper, Jonathan! I’m happy to share information about the awesome open source tools I’m using - just post a question in the Teach category if you’d like to hear more :nerd
It’s great to see other experts and educators here, and we all appreciate your willingness to share your expertise - thank you
Isaiah, what in particular have you been battling with? Tell us more (start a new topic under Learn/GIS) and maybe someone here can help, either now or later in the course
Offline access or downloads is a feature I’m keen to offer in the future, Matthew. What would work best for you?
Are you working with the wonderful Christos Astaras, who taught WildCRU’s PGDip after me?
As with any technical topic, there’s a lot of jargon to learn! Let us know if there’s a particular term or QGIS tool that doesn’t make sense and we’ll do our best to help you sort out your understanding
