Introduce yourself!

Hi everyone!

I’m Fizri master student from Universiti Sains Malaysia. Currently study Social Behaviour of Sunda colugo in Langkawi Island. I heard QGIS from my friend, can’t wait to learn about it!

Hi everyone,
I’m a Malaysian from the state of Sabah. I was part of the Sarawak Dolphin Project (SDP) where I joined in annual surveys of small cetaceans/marine mammals in Kuching Bay and did my undergraduate final year project on small cetaceans. Now I’m currently pursuing my postgraduate studies in my hometown, working on small felids in the Kinabatangan floodplain. My passion has always been conservation whether on wildlife or overall biodiversity. Of course besides having an interest in GIS, it also plays a very big part in the works I do. I want to expand my knowledge by first, building a concrete basic in GIS.

More about me: I am an outdoor person who enjoys hiking! I wish we could travel again after this pandemic. My favorite pastime is either playing music, reading or doing artsy stuff.

This is my first online course and I am really looking forward to learning a great deal of stuff. I had to learn GIS by myself previously with the help of some good friends. This course is here at the right time, thank you Lucy for this opportunity!

Hi, I am Sumedha Korgaonkar from India. I did my Master’s in Zoology -Oceanography and cleared National Eligibility Test(NET) by which I could work as an assistant professor. I’m currently pursuing my Ph.D. from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun on Olive Ridley Sea Turtle nesting behavior and conservation perspective. My institute is autonomously governed by the Ministry of Environment, Govt of India. Research and Policy related to Wildlife in India are the two main works of the Institute. The goal of my Ph.D. is to update the hatchery management and implement tailor-made conservation efforts for sea turtles on the west coast of India. My work is at the landscape level covering a huge area, I am looking into sea turtle nesting patterns and also its migratory pattern by stable isotopes. I wanted to use GIS for the visualization of data, prepare good maps. Additionally, I would like to explore different applications of GIS in the field of conservation.
I’m sure this workshop through assignments, modules, and forum discussion will help me achieve that.
Looking forward to an awesome experience and connect with my fellow learners.

Sumedha

Hello, nice to meet you; I’m Mario, I’m a biologist from Peru.
I work mainly with wildlife in high Andean areas, mainly in Lake Titicaca, especially with birds. I enrolled in the GIS course to learn species distribution modeling among other GIS-related skills.

Hello, I’m Alma. Experienced in ArcGIS, but I’m a QGIS beginner with background in the Oil & Gas, looking for a career change and to learn a lot.
Thank you for the opportunity.

Hi everyone!
My name is Jose, I’m a biologist and I’m currently a researcher and teacher at the Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto in Argentina. I study the impact of different agricultural management and land use intensity on small mammals. My experience in GIS is limited, but with this course, I hope to broaden and deepen my knowledge in this area

Hello everyone,

I am Rutuja Bhatade from India. I did my Master’s in Zoology. Currently working as Research Assistant with WCS-India on their Human-Wildlife Interaction project in Mumbai. I got introduce to QGIS after my master’s, during an internship with WII. Since then I have been learning it in bits & pieces on my own by watching youtube videos. I am interested in learning GIS because it helps us represent complex data in a simplified manner. Thus, helping us to make people easily understand the necessity of conservation by virtual representations. It is an essential tool to analyze large data. I want to apply this tool to my current associated project.

I am looking forward to this course. It will help me connect with diverse researchers with multidisciplinary interests, and their individual expertise and guidance will surely help me achieve my goals.

Thanks & Regards,
Rutuja

HI

I am new to the GIS game. My background is as a zookeeper originally from UK now in NZ and have done a number of animal related courses over the years my later being an MA Anthrozoology. Outside of my job i also volunteer for a management committee for little blue penguins. We are currently starting to PIT tag them in order to gain a better understanding of these birds and contribute to the research. Being able to create maps to tell stories is definitely something we can look to incorporate to utilise when dealing with government parties.

Hi all.

My name is Joti Daya. I am currently pursuing my lifelong passion and dream career in Nature Conservation. I am doing my MSc study on the feeding ecology and habitat preference of Black Rhino in a reserve in Limpopo Province, South Africa.

If there is any reasoning behind my existence in this time of the world, it is undoubtedly coupled with my earnestness and devotion to the environment. This passion I have for and with the environment and all its processes is not a recent engagement, but a blooming adoration that has been cultivated within me as far back as I can remember.

During my studies and my volunteering experience I have acquired the skills and knowledge to enable me to contribute to nature. I would like to continue to render my services in the conservation industry, by improving and upholding the image of conservation. My goal is to ensure the security of the continued existence of nature and wildlife by contributing to the operations of conservation through offering services and performing duties in national parks and reserves

HI Hannah, depending on what GPS device you are using, you should be able to export the GPS data directly as a GPX format file that can then be read straight away by QGIS to visualise the tracks (you will need to check that QGIS project and GPS data have their map projections (CRS) correctly set though (but this is covered within this course a bit later). There are also other software apps for using on mobile devices such as QFIELD that directly link with QGIS so you can easily capture field survey data and incorporate into QGIS projects (some even allow direct upload to “cloud servers” so that field data can be mapped in real time). Cheers Jonathan

I have some background knowledge in GIS, but such refresher courses are very important to keep one abreast with recent developments in the domain. I offer a course in Remote Sensing and GIS at the Department of Geography and Planning of the University of Bamenda as a Part-Time Lecturer. It is therefore incumbent upon me to take this course since the know-how will help me in my teaching process.
As a senior Research Officer at the Cameroon’s National Institute of Cartography (a research structure under the tutelage of the Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation), the knowledge gain from the course will be indispensable in fulfilling the task assigned to me at my Institute.
