Good day, everyone.

I`m Thanisha Kumar from Malaysia. I have completed my BSc in Animal Resource Science and Management and now continuing my MSc in Herpetology. For my masters I will be working on the latitudinal and geographical comparison of selected life history attributes in Skinks in Malaysia. Well, my motive is to understand the ecology of the skink species in various range of latitudes. In my research, data such as, thermoregulation preferences, movement, home range of the skink are needed. Therefore, this is a wonderful opportunity for me to learn QGIS to improve my knowledge, skills in the conversation field.

I am really looking forward to joining everyone on this journey.

Regards,
Thanisha

Hi, I am Kate Evans and I am Founder & Director of Elephants for Africa a charity and NGO studying male African savannah elephants in Botswana, trying to understand their social and ecological needs alongside those of the communities that border the Makgadikgadki Pans, National Park. Whilst I love what I do and the impact we are having, more and more of my work is administration and I would like to readjust things to be able to get back to science (I am a trained Zoologist) - I used GIS for my PhD but do not feel confident in tackling mapping at the moment, as things have moved on so much, so I look forward to taking a small step back into the science I love with this course.

I would love to learn more about the rodents - had a plague of them when I was first in Botswana - quite extraordinary.

Hi everyone,

I’m Becca, I’m a PhD student based in Cardiff studying the diet and parasite infection of the European turtle dove. My PhD has been very molecular work based, so I haven’t had much experience in QGIS. As I’m coming to the end of my PhD, I want to improve my mapping skills which I can take forward into my other role with the White Stork Project, and future positions.

Hi everyone,

My name is Annie, I’m American but have lived and worked in South Africa for 6 years now. I began my MSc in Resource Conservation Biology at the University of Witswatersrand in April. I’m going to be investigating the movement of African wild dogs Lycaon pictus around the western boundary of Kruger National Park, with particular emphasis on the impact of lion densities in neighbouring private reserves (APNR). I’m taking this course because I’ve only a basic understanding of GIS and know this will be essential to my work!

Thanks and looking forward,
Annie

My name is Precious Moyo (Mr), because of the name I know many people assume I am female but I am male!! I am Zimbabwean and work for an International NGO that is into Food Security and Livelihoods. I am employed as a MEL Officer, and find myself handling spatial data which I sometimes struggle to report hence my desire to acquire QGIS skills. I hope this course will open this door wider.

Hi Everyone! I’m Cassie. I’m an environmental educator turned middle school science teacher currently based in Florida, USA. My BSc is in Animal Behavior Training and Enrichment and I am currently studying for my MAT in Biological Sciences. I am looking to break into the conservation field and have volunteered with APE Malaysia to help improve the quality of care in Malaysia zoos and rescue centers, as well as replant rainforest in Sabah. I was first introduced to GIS through the Endangered Species Recovery course with Durrell Wildlife Conservation Academy, and I’m excited to dive deeper!

Hi Patience. We used to talk a lot about the Mabula Groud Hornbill Project when I worked at the Palm Beach Zoo. We had a Southern Ground-hornbill named, Darla. She was a great ambassador for the species and inspired a lot of people to donate to the project. I’m excited to be learning with you in this course.

Hi Eluned! I learned a lot from you when I did the ESR course at Durrell. I’m interested to hear more about how your study on zoo visitors goes.
