Learning goals, June-July 2021

My goal is to become familiar with GIS, to expend my skill set in preparation for a career change

My goal is to learn the basics of QGIS and apply these in the working environment.

My goal is to become competent with navigating QGIS, working with basic spatial data revelant to my current MSc and marine project I’m involved in, and creating maps that could be included in my work.

Hello!
My goal is to learn the basics of QGIS, create a map using the example data and figure out how I can best use QGIS to better visualize my future data that I will collect for my dissertation research.

Hi Kate!
I also am taking this course to improve my GIS skills and incorporate this into future studies! Great to see you here!

Karin Schwartz

My goal is to refresh my GIS knowledge and acquire skills to use QGIS in future studies. In addition, I’m interested in the format and technical development of online courses for conservation biology and am looking at the effectiveness of this course as an educational tool - everything from conveying information, to formatting of screens, to clarity in instruction for the software, etc.

My goal is to be able to use QGIS in wildlife conservation and management

I would like to be able to import my field observations into QGIS. As a rhino monitor I often have to understand the distribution of these species and it would help if I can plot all data on a map.

Secondly, i deal with camera traps so it would be beneficial to be able to create maps of all their locations

my learning goal is: by the end of 11th July 2021 to acquire the basic skills of GIS particularly skills that will help me import my field observations into QGIS and create a map of my survey locations.

Hi Karen, How lovely to see you here too - small world  Hope everything is going well for you in these challenging times. Best wishes Kat

My goal is to become is to expend my skill in GIS and use field staff data to create map

My goal is to be able to use GIS for my future research endeavor.

Learning the basics of GIS will help me plan how to conduct research incorporating GIS in the river ecosystem by (1) identifying potential fieldwork sites by examining maps of the area in QGIS.

I work on an estuarine and near shore species (seagrass), and ultimately I would like to learn how to calculate the distance between two co-ordinate points, along the coast line/through the ocean, so that I can look at the relationship between genetic differentiation between populations and geographic distance.

My goals are to understand the capabilities of the software and become proficient in its use by the end of the course so that I can use it in my volunteering work

My modest learning goals are to be able to create maps of my project areas and regularly update them with field data points to be able to demonstrate project progress/impact over time.

I think the functionalities of the software itself seem to be pretty straightforward for me. My goals for this course would be firstly to learn how to create my datasets and perhaps get a better understanding of the different file types to use. And secondly to be able to engage and make sense of the data we use.

My goal is to be competent in using GIS data and making GIS maps so that I can use it in the classroom and eventually in the field of conservation.

As I am a brand new user of GIS, my goals for this week was to become familiar with GIS and and its basic operations.

My goals include:
create and edit spatial data in qgis
exploring QGIS functionality
learn different mapping techniques

My learning goals for this course is to understand what GIS can be used for and to understand the usability of this tool. I want to have the ability to take the information from this course and implement it into my PhD project if I so desire. I also want to learn how to access the resources such as the Copernicus global land cover used in module one.
