Module 2 assignment: Representing data

Hi!
I really like your map and it is clear and easy to understand. Great job and my map looks more or less as yours too.

Best wishes

It was interesting to play about with the layers and change the colours and symbols on the data.
When I initially started up I had a lot of errors on the layers, saying that loading had been interrupted. I found closing and opening again solved this.

I agree the drop boxes were a useful tool to learn and think about the data.

Really like the hatched pattern you used for the nature reserve - I need to play around with that.

I think you did great. Just play around with zoom and colours

Are vectors mostly shape files? When you begin a GIS project, you will start by opening a vector data eg. road map, distribution map? Then followed by raster data e.g. land cover, land use?

Here is my assignment for module two. I struggled slightly with understanding the raster layers, and had difficulty getting the right files into my layers but after some fiddling about I have managed to get them to work. I am going to go away and experiment with my own data this week so that I am working with data that I understand and can relate to.

here is my module 2 assignment i was able to import all the data needed to complete it but i faced a challenge when i had to put my panel layers in order so that every layer can show properly on the map but after struggling i was able to play around with my layers and came up with a correct view.

Hola Juliana, thank you!!! That helps me a lot. I finally made it!

I think this module has been fair however it has been very challenging for me. Am not even sure if the screen shot I have shared here is correct or not. If there is any support from anyone here in the community, I welcome it. I need some step by step support here.

This is my final product. Reviewing other maps I’ve noticed that I missed a line layer somewhere. I know this is just an exercise, but if someone knows what or where I went wrong and point it out to me that would be wonderful.
Thanks!
Helina

This module really helped in understanding the difference between raster and vector layers, the different types of raster and vectors layers as well as what they are used for. I noticed that things can become a bit confusing and disorganized when there are a greater number of layers so customizing the layers to differentiate them is quite important. Overall, this module has led me a step closer to my learning goals as I am starting to understand and practice with QGIS more.

Hello Helina, I think that you’ve done a wonderful job. I compared your map to mine and it seems that we have the same layers. How did you change the color of the VNM_cov layer, the one that shows up in shades of brown on your map? I tried changing the color of mine since it was grayscale but had quite a bit of trouble. Any insight would be appreciated! Great job!

Hi everyone!

This is my work.

I enjoyed this module a lot . It was great learning the differences between vectors and rasters and how we can use these to present our field work. This will pretty much help me to effectively present my field work in the near future.

Hi Mamushmiss

Well done for completing your second module. Your work looks good. I have a few suggestions to even improve even more, I would suggest that you decrease the transparency of your raster layers so that your work looks neater. Also it would be a good idea to put the boundary of the Che Tao Nature Reserve underneath the other polygon since that one is transparent. Overall, good work.

I was struggling with my layer organization, didn’t see how to make it all work, and came to read everyone’s comments - so helpful, especially the opacity slider for the Vietnam cover vrt.

I found that this module was helpful in learning how to piece together different data sets into a map that better help illustrate your data. The important part I found was to organize your layers so that they do not block datasets. One problem I encountered was downloading some of the maps from the links and figuring out what part of the files needed to be integrated into the map. It took some figuring out and looking at what other peers did. It greatly helped me understand the difference between vector and raster datasets.

Hi, it looks like you have your map in pretty nice order. The one thing I would check is it looks like you have multiples of each of the open street map items. I agree the opacity of the map boundaries does help illustrate the distribution.

Thank you, I had this issue too and your comment helped me!

  • This was a great module. i am now practically understanding the differences between raster and vector data. although i had serious challenges on putting my vector data, i had challenges downloading the roads.i still need to put more practice untill i get it right. so far, the course is helping a lot more specially to someone like me who never learn QGIS before. i will appreciate help on where i failed on this assignmnet.
