Hello there!
I’m Juliana, a Marine Biology student from Argentina.
I’m actually working on my thesis, creating isoscapes of the Patagonian Shelf using isotope values from Magellanic Penguin blood samples.
My goal is to improve my QGIS knowledge in order to create clean and intuitive isoscapes.
I’m looking foward to start practicing!
Hi, my name is Diky Dwiyanto. I am currently working with my M.Sc thesis about phylogeography of freshwater endemic shrimp from Sulawesi. I also conduct my research in Zoological Community of Celebes (ZCC) focussed on conservation and building awareness for those local people who life in the unprotected area near the national park. Thank you for this course.
Hello
My name is Chelsea (she/they). I am an M.S. candidate in the Interdisciplinary Marine & Estuarine Sciences degree program and San Francisco State University in San Francisco, CA, USA. I live about 40 miles south of SF in San Jose. I also received my B.S. from SFSU in Microbiology.
I currently work in a marine biogeochemistry lab, where we look at refractory (old, relatively unreactive) dissolved organic carbon in marine sediment. While GIS is not necessary for my current project, I am hoping to develop skills in GIS to use for a future research project, where I hope to look into how aquaculture projects can be used to fight food injustices here in the Bay Area.
Hello everyone!
One of my goals for this course is to become equally proficient at QGIS and ArcGIS Pro. My graduate degree included mostly usage of ArcGIS Pro and some QGIS. Now as I hunt for the perfect job, I see a number of companies want their candidate to know QGIS instead of ArcGIS Pro.
I worked as a data scientist in the aerospace industry for 30+ years and am embarking on a new chapter in the world of GIS. Being a data junkie, a numbers person, and someone who enjoys the challenge of technical problems helps me fit right in as a rocket scientist or as a GIS technician.
I’m looking forward to this course, to learning new tips and tricks from so many of you, and I hope to contribute to other learner’s success if asked.
Thanks,
Paul
Kia ora everyone. My name is Craig Morley and this is my first foray into QGIS. Most of my career has been spent on managing and studying the impact invasive species in New Zealand and the South Pacific. I have also worked on New Zealand’s Department of Conservation and I now work at the local Polytechnic here in Rotorua, New Zealand teaching environmental economics, and resource management. I thought it was about time I started learning some new techniques because it is just becoming so difficult with the old methods, so I look forward to working my way through this with everybody else. Good luck everyone
Hi
I am Adebola Esther Adeniji, I had my bachelor degree in Ecotourism and Wildlife management. I have experience working in the GIS and Remote Sensing Section of Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria. I have great interest in using GIS in wildlife conservation, I believe this training will give me a platform and knowledge needed. It is so great to be here. Nice to meet you all.
I’m Jeremiah from Nigeria. I’m a student of Remote sensing and GIS.
joining that platform is an opportunity to widen my knowledge and I really want to know more…
I hope my aims are achieved and my expectations are met.
Hi everyone!
I manage an AmeriCorps Fellowship designed to send recent college graduates out to rural farm and forest communities across California. Our fellows spend eleven months supporting local agencies in their efforts to promote regenerative agriculture and fire and forest resilience. Many of our fellows learn GIS throughout their term of service and I am hoping that having a base understanding of QGIS will help me support them to a greater extent. I also have an undergraduate degree in conservation biology and may consider going back to grad school in the future.
Outside of work I enjoy mountain biking, climbing, hiking, kayaking with my dog all around California and the greater western region of the states.
Thank you for offering this course!!
Hello everyone,
My name is Audra. I did my undergrad in Fisheries and Wildlife, but I’m currently working at an environmental consulting firm as a environmental scientist. I’m looking to gain more experience with wildlife/conservation and it seems many jobs want or require GIS knowledge. I took one GIS course at university, however very little stuck with me. I’m interested in this course as a refresher to relearn the basics.
Hi Craig,
Nice to see a Kiwi here! I’m American, but spent 2018-2019 living in NZ on a working holiday. I wanted to spend some time volunteering for DOC, but the timing never worked out. Enjoyed getting to know the native birds though - the fantail was my favorite. Miss New Zealand everyday! Good luck to you as well!
Thanks Audra. Where did you visit in NZ and where abouts in the US are you? My brother lives in Virginia, not far from Langley the CIA headquarters!!! He too misses NZ but with this virus doing the rounds he can’t travel, well he can but doesn’t want to risk things. This should be a fun course to learn…cheers Craig
I am currently a student at my community college earning my A.S. and will transfer to a university where I will earn a Master’s in Wildlife Biology and Conservation. I do not have any experience with GIS so I am here to learn a new skill or at least expose myself to it to be more competitive when applying for internships. I currently volunteer at a wildcat sanctuary in Wiley, Texas where I assist in animal care. I clean dens and do night time feedings.
Hi Gobi!! I’m pleased to meet you and thanks for your comment. I read your profile and it’s so interesting.
Nice to follow you too.
Hi everyone! My name is Luis. I just finished my first year as an undergrad majoring in Biology at University of California, Riverside. My dream would be to work directly in the field of ecology, and I’m particularly interested in areas such as wildlife conservation and habitat restoration. Ultimately my goal is to help the environment in whatever way I can!
I know GIS skills are indispensable when it comes to this field, so I’m excited to start learning the basics!
Hi all
I’m a student in New Zealand studying wildlife management
I’m passionate about insects and their conservation and I am hoping this course will give me some extra skills towards working with insects
Hi, I’m Emma, and a bit late to the party here!
I’m studying a masters in wildlife management at the University of Otago in New Zealand. I therefore don’t have nearly as much field/real-life experience as many of you seem too, however I am eager to get working in the conservation realm and think this course will be useful for my future career!
I have loved, and wanted to work with, animals for as long as I can remember and wildlife conservation seemed to be the natural path for me to go down. I was lucky enough to travel to Brunei just before COVID took over the world, and here I discovered my passion for amphibians I hope to go a bit more down the herpetology route in my future, however Ethiopian wolves are also one of my dream animals to work with - I see a few of you are fortunate enough to have had that experience already!!
There’s my ramble, I look forward to learning lots and connecting with some really interesting people!
Hi! My name is Tiffany and I just completed my Bachelor’s in Environmental Science. I’m hoping further GIS experience will help me in future related opportunities. I’m personally interested in wetland and other terrestrial ecosystems although I participated in a sea turtle lab (where I assisted in identifying sea turtle epibionts) at my university. I’m excited for my future possibilities although I’m currently just a barista.
Hi Hannah! Sounds like you’re on an exciting path, I definitely hope this course helps refresh. GIS is so easy to forget. I took my first course less than a year ago and I already feel like I’ve forgotten all of it. Additionally, if you have any tips on becoming a park ranger in FL I’d love to hear them
Hi my name is Mpume from South Africa, I’m doing my final year in BA Environmental Management at the University of South Africa, I am so looking forward to this exciting opportunity to learn.
Hi all,
I am Deborah. I live in South Africa. I am glad to have been given this opportunity to learn more about GIS. I am a Master’s student in Environmental Management and I intent to acquire GIS skills as are at the moment very important in various fields of Environmental management. They are used in Environmental impact assessment and Environmental Monitoring.
Having these skills, I hope to be more exposed to work opportunities in which these skills are needed and in order to safeguard the environment.
Thank you
