Introduce yourself!

Hi, I’m Lutondo and I’m a biologist, and I work as a field assistant in several investigations in the area of biodiversity. and I would like to learn more about GIS to improve understanding and interpreting the results of my work.
thanks.

Thank you very much jonathan

Hello everyone!
I’m Idoko Silas Salem. I’m finishing my degree in Ecotourism and wildlife management from the Federal University of Technology Akure Ondo state Nigeria. I’m a member of Environmental Conservation Club ECC and Nigeria Conservation Club NSEC. I’m currently doing my internship with Omu Resort.
I was introduced to remote sensing and GIS earlier this year where I used QGIS to software for a lot of practical work.
I’m a nature lover with a great interest in wildlife conservation.
I’m glad to be here to tap from the knowledge of QGIS .

Mr. Oluwadunin, I’m Idoko Silas Salem your student, a 400levvel student of EWM from FUTA.
I’m currently on IT.
It is a good thing to have you here.

Hello I’m Tumelo D. Mudimba. I’m an undergrad at the University of Zimbabwe majoring in Ecology. GIS is going to be a life saver in my work. Its great to be part of this. Thank you

Hello! I am a Programs Coordinator with WCN, a non-profit organization that protects endangered wildlife by supporting conservationists. I am a beginner at GIS and am hoping to learn how to use GIS to create useful visual representations of data to support our conservationist partners as well as dynamic resources for donors.

I live in Philadelphia, PA, USA, my organization is based in San Francisco, and the conservation programs I support span the globe (mostly Africa)! I am looking forward to learning and sharing with everyone!

Hi everyone.

I recently obtained my BSc Hons in Geography majoring in environmental studies. Looking to learning more about GIS and how I can apply it in my field.

Hi everyone,

I am graduated with a bachelor’s degree specialised in Fisheries science at the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Since December 2017 I have been working with Blue Resources Trust and collecting data on sharks and rays encountered at landing sites in the north, east and west coasts of Sri Lanka. Under this project we aim to collect all possible data including catch location. Because of their life history parameters they are vulnerable to overfishing. For their protection and conservation our data collection is very important.

Mapping is very important to show our species distribution and fishing grounds. So I hope this course will give the initiation of my mapping skill in QGIS.

Best wishes to all participants,
many thanks,
Gobi

hi Kiminthe,

I have gone through your self introduction and it was interesting and similar to my field. If you have a group with space add me into that group to follow this course together.

many thanks,
Gobi

Hi All,
My name is Helina and I’m a Ph.D. student at Boise State University in Idaho, USA. I’m still figuring out my dissertation research, but I’m hoping I get to work with local the local Native American Tribes Shoshone-Bannock on water conservation and ecosystem services. I think there will be some type of mapping data, but just not sure exactly what yet. Therefore, I’m taking this class to learn the basics.

Excited to learn with you all!
Helina

Hi folks

I’m Kanishka, from Essex in the UK. I’m a career switcher, or trying to be. Up till now I’ve been an IT Project Manager but finally taking the plunge to shift into conservation after 20 years of talking about it!

I’ve been using lockdown to retrain with a variety of conservation related online courses and that’s why I’m here, so thanks @LucyTallents for making this available!

I’ve also recently started volunteering for bird and bat surveys to get as much experience as possible, and also to try be somewhat useful until the world opens up again.

Thanks, and looking forward to getting stuck in!

Hej @ctsholofelo - that would be really useful. We are using it a bit in the MPNP for making hotspots of fence transgression - well before the fence went back now. We are keeping an eye on it to see if the elephants break through again. Would love to see what you are finding out.

HI Audrey - you may be interested in this organisation WildlifeAct https://wildlifeact.com/ which is based in South Afirca and also focuses on protecting endanged wildlife. Although they are based in South Africa and do a lot of work with South African National Parks, they also work elsewhere and have one of their staff based in Kenya. Cheers

Hello everyone ,
I hold a master II degree in Biology, Ecology and Animal Conservation . I’m still learning and would like to get knowledge about QGIS because this software is very important especially when you want to publish an article and want to show your own map.
I hope to have fun in learning
Best wishes,

I am an educator, researcher and a scholar with a Crop Science and Biometry educational background. My research interests are in botany, agronomy, ecology, agroforestry and crop ecophysiology particularly drought and heat stress tolerance in tropical crops esp small grains and legumes .I did a modules in GIS but with less practical. I attended a one week training by an Ethopian lady thats were i was introduced to ArcGIS and could do mapping however I lost the touch due to lack of practice. Looking forward to retooling myself now with QGIS. Have lived in Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Have been to Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania. I focus where the rest fear thats my motto.

Hi Everyone!

I´m Luis Alejandro Villagra, from Jujuy, Argentina. I´m finishing my degree career in National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco in Puerto Madryn city, in the same country.
Currently I haven´t a topic for continue my studies in a near future, but I am very interested in mammals conservation, I´ve been working with them for many years in rescue centers, internships, museum collections, and my thesis topic is about Fluctuating Asymmetries in Lowlands Tapirs.
I believe that this course will provide me with tools that I will be able to use at some point when I have the opportunity to work not only in species conservation, but also in situations where I have to resort to spatial graphical representations.

Cheers!

Alejandro

Hello, I’m Andy and I am a volunteer who monitors the number and type of invertebrates in the river Cain in Wales for the Severn River Trust as part of the Riverfly Partnership. I grateful for the chance to his GIS beginners course so that I can develop layers showing different invertebrate species on a common map.

Tafola from American Samoa,

My name is Motusaga Vaeoso and I work for the American Samoa Coral Reef Advisory Group as a Project Lead in studying the spread of an invasive algae on the reef flats of Ofu, Manu’a island.

I am trying to map out the distribution and severity of the Valonia algae in Ofu and I am hoping that this course can help with that, or at least get me started in the right direction.
