Module 4 assignment: Making maps

Hi,

Nice work. A good clear map, and detailed nicely.

Thanks for feedback, its always a bit of a trade off between how much information goes on the map and the context in which it is used. The map example was part of a bigger overall project with other maps which did have the scale and a lot more detail on. Also - if you are interested, the GIS data also fed into an online web mapping product too (using ESRI ArcGIS Online) - you can see it here - ArcGIS Web Application

Thanks Sianes, Your work is neat and clean and is very much precise with the selection of layers and symbology. Will try to keep in mind your valuable suggestions from my next assignments.

My map’s message is to indicate the distribution of Gibbon within this nature reserve as well as the different threats the gibbon faces. This map leaves some food for thought as it catalyses ideas around what protection means and potentially why Gibbon’s would still face threats although in a protected area.
As you can see I struggled to incorporate both sighting survey datasets into one and so left them seperate. Could someone tell me how to combine the data sets?
I really enjoyed learning to categorised the vector data differently to extract more out of the data to inform the map. I also enjoyed playing around with the different sizing for the symbols. This module allowed me to get more comfortable with QGIS and im confident in taking my mapping forward outside of this course. Thank you its been a great learning experience!

Hi your map looks great wow I love how you have used the space to be so informative! I can see clearly the correlation you’re trying to make between the threats and distribution which gives me a good idea to change the symbology shape more drastically when trying to make correlations too. Do you think the arrow pointing to the zoomed in map is necessary?

Hi @MichSoo , I also faced the same problem with my legend. I like that you have added a zoom in layout in your map.

Hi @gautam_wildlife , your map looks great! Maybe you can try to include only a few focused legend such as gibbon sightings and National park instead of displaying all. Cheers!

I am glad that this module is included in this course. It can be challenging for me to arrange the legends to create a user-friendly map. I also faced some problem in my gibbon sightings legend.

This assignment was really interesting. I had a lot of fun exploring different map features.
The module was very informative and easy to follow.
While adding an inset map, my main map features kept changing. But, I finally understood that I have to lock layers and its properties before updating the map preview.

Please let me know if I can improve anywhere.

Hey!
Great work on the Map.
Under the layer item properties, check both ‘Lock layers’ and ‘Lock styles for layers’ boxes. This will prevent any changes in the main map after refreshing.

Thanku Jane i really appreciate your suggestions and will work on that.

Hey!
I love the way you have represented your map. It is very detailed and informative, and yet very neat.
Great work!

Had a challenge adding an inset map, I locked layers on the 1st Map, then when I add another map its comes out blank.

A well detailed map, just think the style used on threats evidence makes it difficult to differentiate campfire and logging but other wise thumbs up. :+1:

This is the map I made through the module. I just added some features to make my map look interesting and for my satisfaction. I enjoyed a lot making this, although I have lots of trouble when adding ang adjusting the right keys to make this right, those redo’s and undo’s I did made me motivated to finish this today. I loved how this module tied everything together. Thank you Ms. Lucy for the opportunity

hey! Your map looks great and easy to understand. keep up the good work

Great map, I like how each group size has been represented by a different size of the symbol. I would like to know how this is done.

Actually I do think with showing the background map it is easier to visualize the Gibbon sightings compared to the landcover and roads. Though, when watching to maps of others, it is a lot and might not be fully clear and as visible as it can be, so it could have some more adjustments to the colours and layers to use I think.

For my current work as ecologist we are used to make similar maps, an example I have made you can see below. Under the black box were written the details of the location/company name etc. The map displays sightings of bats.

@Katie_McArthur I do like the layers of your map as it easily to see the different borders as there is not a lot of distraction  Something I might need to work with a bit more in my map.
I do think you might be able to make some improvements in your legenda by updating their names more concrete. The different colors are great as there is not any possibility for confusion. Well done!

A much more in depth lesson this time, but really good as it made me think and experiment more. Some of the editing tools are quite frustrating, but I guess once you get the hang of it it becomes much faster and easier to navigate. My gibbon sightings are still merged into one, which I think makes the map simpler, and I’ve chosen to include some of the OSM features as I thought they helped to place the sightings and threats into some context.
